The Church World Service "Giving Hope" program is assisting more than 30,000 orphans and other children in five East African countries, empowering youth caregivers to effectively support themselves and look after their younger siblings.
Prepared by Church World Service to facilitate a youth empowerment approach among organizations working with orphan- and youth-headed vulnerable households, this guidebook is dedicated to those youth who, in the face of HIV and the stigma of perceived brokenness, are standing tall, with courage, determination, solidarity and faith.
They are the inspiration for the Giving Hope Empowerment Methodology, which seeks to focus the efforts of social workers and community volunteers on creating spaces where youth caregivers can come together and take charge of their futures… and ours. They are teaching us adults to believe in their capacities. They have given us hope.
The guidebook was written by Tammi Mott, in consultation with Church World Service partner organizations and Caroline Thuo Reggy, Church World Service Giving Hope Program Coordinator in East Africa. Photographs were provided by Tammi Mott, Caroline Thuo Reggy, Micah McCoy and CWS partners.
Church World Service’s creation of this guidebook was funded by the St. Marys
United Methodist Church Foundation, Inc.
