Refugees face many barriers when arriving to the United States; finding employment being one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of the businesses and individuals who have given refugees a chance to prove their dedication and strong work ethic here in Lancaster. In particular, Cork & Cap Hotel has employed 10 of our refugees, Auntie Anne's Pretzels has given employment opportunities to 6 refugees and Bent Creek Country Club has recently hired 3 refugees.
Below we have highlighted the struggles and successes of Haitian medical evacuee, Chrisna Delasin.
Chrisna Delasin and her son came to the United States after the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Her son had been trapped under a pile of rubble for three days until he was finally rescued and taken to the hospital.
The hospitals in Port-au-Prince, Haiti were unable to treat him and the two were evacuated to a Miami hospital for care. After receiving treatment they were given a long term temporary legal status and were resettled in Lancaster, PA. Chrisna and Miguelson were welcomed by one of the March 2010 blizzards. For a family who has never even experienced a single flake of snow, a snow blizzard was a shock for them! Chrisna is now working at Cork and Cap Hotel and in addition to caring for her injured son she also continues to take care of the family members who were left behind in Haiti. The medical evacuee program allowed the injured survivor to be accompanied by one close family member or friend. This means that Chrisna's other children remain behind in Haiti and they, along with much of the population, continue to live on the streets in great need of aid.
Despite these hardships, Chrisna and her son have embraced their new lives in Lancaster. In May Chrisna was given the opportunity to work at Cork & Cap Hotel in the housekeeping department. She is extremely motivated and always goes the extra mile to ensure she does well at work.
Thank you Cork & Cap Hotel, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, and Bent Creek Country Club for giving refugees like Chrisna a chance to find success in Lancaster!
